Challenging Book
I'm so glad someone else recommended this book to me and that I found it for sale at this web site! Being a missionary to Cambodia myself, this was a great book for me to read. Reading how the Lord worked in the lives of the Cambodian people in the past, reminded me that He can and will still change people's lives in Cambodia today! I would really recommend this book to anyone who can find a copy!

This book will change the way you think!
After reading this book, my views on foreign missions were enhanced and changed forever. God's manifest power is clearly described in this book about post-communist Cambodia missions work and it will light a blazing fire in you that won't be easily put out. I wish that this book were more available! It needs to be re-printed and distributed again. If there is any way that you can get your hands on this book, do so immediately! It will change your heart!

I loved it
This is an incredible book that shouldn't be so hard to get ahold of! You can't put it down. The power of God is evident throughout. Best missionary book I've ever read; I've also heard it compared with "Bruchko". Definitely read it.

The Art of Astute Investing: Building Wealth With No-Load Mutual Funds
Published in Hardcover by AMACOM (May, 1998)
Author: C. Todd Conover
Average review score:

Excellent for do-it-yourself investors!
I read a lot of books and articles on personal finance and investing - this book is one of the best I have read and acted on....the author really motivates you to plan your portfolio...and he sure has a lucid way to make it look easy. If you're committed to getting a sense of your financial life and want to build a comprehensive investment portfolio, get this book!

VWS review of Conover's Astute Investing
This book provides the most systematic approach to investing I havc encountered. Its step-by-step approach walks one through the process from establishment of investment objectives through examination of investment alternatives and the selection of funds based on meaningful criteria. Very well presented, and most certainly highly recommended!

This is a user-friendly comprehensive book for investors
I thought I knew how to select a mutual fund and to diversify my portfolio before I read this book. Now I have adjustments to make. Conover gives valuable tables of criteria for bonds and funds, which I copied for personal use, and he offers his own slightly-outdated top picks. This is a must read for unsure investors with any investing horizon!

Before You Say "I Do": Important Questions for Couples to Ask Before Marriage
Published in Paperback by Perigee (January, 1998)
Authors: Todd Outcalt and Tods Outcalt
Average review score:

Older but Still Good Useful
This book has been around quite a while but I still found some very useful advice and tips on conversations that we should have before deciding to get engaged. However, I did feel that there were some topics that weren't covered or covered with enough depth.

Another enourmously useful piece is 1000 Questions for Couples which is the most comprehensive material on the subject I have found. I discovered it at questionsforcouples. com

Great book to help open communication with your partner!
I think this is a great book to help open communication with your partner. Marriage is the biggest decision you will ever have to make in your life. Why not learn all you can about the person you are going to marry before you say "I do"? Most of the questions are really common sense but, this book organizes them for you and gives you a good outline to start from. Any couple using this book is sure to have countless hours of great discussions. The only thing that I think is missing in this book is a work book to go along with the book. Otherwise, great book to help couples learn about each other!

Every engaged couple should read this book!
This book delves into important issues that engaged couples often overlook when planning their wedding. Reading it stimulated some very enlightening discussions between my husband-to-be and me about things which had never come up when we were dating but which we would have to deal with during our marriage. I learned a lot about my fiance and myself with the help of this book.

The Cuban Exile Movement: Dissidents or Mercenaries?
Published in Paperback by Ocean Press (July, 2000)
Authors: Hernando Calvo, Katlijn Declercq, and Mary Todd
Average review score:

Let Them Speak
This book uses a simple but profoundly effective strategy: interview the exile "leaders" and let them indict themselves with their own words. The book lists a veritable who's who of the exile terrorists ("mercenaries" in the title is an unwarranted kindness by the authors, in my view).

It is important for readers to realize, however, that not all exiles support the criminal activities of the few exiles who dream of seizing power in Cuba.

The book provides some background on the interviewees, thereby giving the work a good historical perspective. This book is indispensable to understanding the exile movement and the US government's complicity in its activities.

A much needed book
The US media would have you believe that Cuban Exiles are a bunch of freedom loving , non-violent group that seeks only to free Cuba of "dictatorship"

This book proves them to be liars. And proves it with their own words.

The authors interview Cuban Exile extremists and let the readers decide not from right wing Americans or Pro Castro Cubans, but decide from hearing them with their own words.

Exile terrorists have done thousands of terrorist acts in Cuba that have killed men women and children. Often done with the open support and approval of the US government.

And what did Castro do to get the Exile so upset? Kick out the US-backed, corrupt Batista dictatorship run by the Casinos and Mob with American Capitalists owning all the resources of Cuba.

And what did Castro accomplish? Near 100% literacy, a lower infant mortality rate than the US, Universal Heatlhcare system proclaimed by the World Bank as a "model" for the third world, free education through the university level, Free Housing, Guaranteed work, and the highest standard of living in all of Latin America and all this DESPITE US aggression, US Embargo, and Cuban Exile terrorism.

While most of the Latin American countries that Cuba has a higher standard of living than, receives open US aid and support, Cuba receives open hostility and embargoes.

And the Exiles not only abandon their country but attack it and whine about Americans not doing enough to help them!

Real nice guys huh?

Recommended reading for students of Cuban/American politics
The Cuban Exile Movement: Dissidents Or Mercenaries? is a riveting political expose of extremist Cuban exile groups living in, and operating out of, the United States. Hernando Calvo and Katlijn Declercq present the results of exceptionally detailed research and investigation of links between Cuban exile groups and the CIA, especially in reference to terrorist activities against Cuba and other members of the Cuban community in the United States. Included are candid interviews with principle members of the Cuban exile movement and commentaries on the Cuban exile movement by Wayne Smith and other authorities on the U.S.-Cuba conflict. The Cuban Exile Movement is highly recommended reading for students of Cuban/American politics, Cold War and Post-Cold War international relations, and western hemispheric studies.

As a kindergarten-first grade teacher, I love Todd Parr's books! They all have simple easy to read text and always have a laugh on every page! My class loved the page that said "Don't kiss a cootie bug!" We even created out own class book, based on Todd Parr's story. Each child wrote their own page of a do and a don't! Great Fun! I would highly reccommend all of Todd Parr's books!

Simple, funny, and true!
I adore all of the Todd Parr books! They might seem a bit silly to some people, at first, but they truly grow on you. The Flight of the White Horse
Published in Paperback by Writers Showcase Press (January, 2002)
Author: Todd Moffett
Average review score:

A Lyrical, Compelling Fantasy
Todd Moffett has achieved something extraordinary with his book The Flight of the White Horse--he has written a fantasy which both hearkens back to classics such as the Chronicles of Narnia, and tells a story so original that the ending cannot be predicted even by an astute reader of fantasy fiction. This book, which has appeal for adolescent through adult readers, tells the story of Prince Tomlin's quest to free a trapped princess, Vera. This story works on the level of adventure tale as well as that of metaphysical journey, with not a wasted word. This book should delight fantasy fans as well as literary conoisseurs.

First-Rate Storytelling
Early on, the reader senses the author's emotional investment in this work. Whether involved in a tender love scene, chatting among rivals, or engaged in a life-or-death struggle, the characters' thoughts, actions, and deeds appropriately complement or contrast their detailed environmental, historical and geographical backdrops. A lot of thought and research went into this book!

The story's dream sequences best reveal the author's talent. Through these scenes, Moffett evokes a vivid sense of ephemeral helplessness, hidden desire and mystery. Great reading.

Vision Quest
Todd Moffett's novel _The Flight of the White Horse_ is a clever, fantastic narrative built around Prince Tomlin's quest for the Lady Vera, imprisoned by the insidious Lord Harra. When he acts on faith and acknowledges the power and existence of the White Prince, Tomlin defeats the force of darkness in a climactic scene whose vivid, forceful style keeps the reader engaged and hoping for more.
Various elements in this novel appeal greatly to the imagination and draw the reader into Tomlin's vision quest. Paricularly enticing is the idea of having Harra use a necklace to entrap the Lady Vera. Another is Tomlin's encounter with the Lady Sharamar in a section that recalls Odysseus' encountter with Circe. A third is the dream sequence, preceding the climactic battle, in which Tomlin struggles to maintain his sanity. _The Flight of the White Horse_ is a well thought out, well conceived piece of writing.
There is another element that contributes greatly to this novel's effectiveness, and that is Mr. Moffett's use of descriptive detail. The descriptions are vivid and give the narrative a somewhat cinematic flavor. Consider the following passage, for instance: "The floor in front of them screamed open to reveal not a lower level of the castle but a rocky den, horrible with monsters, their gaping mouths clustered with teeth, their claws raking the air; cries and growls and the scent of terrible things eaten billowed from their mouths"(264).
_The Flight of the White Horse_ is a well written, exciting novel. In the future, I hope to see more work of this calibre from Todd Moffett.

The Boundaryless Organization: Breaking the Chains of Organization Structure, Revised and Updated
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (11 January, 2002)
Authors: Ron Ashkenas, Dave Ulrich, Todd Jick, and Steve Kerr
Average review score:

"From Domestic Boundaries to Global Village of Tomorrow"
"Like Marko Polo discovering a new world of trade, organizations today are exploring vast new markets throughout the globe. The process is nothing less than a revolution, breaking down once sacrosanct boundaries of space, time, and nationality...In today's world, there is no longer a dichotomy between domestic and foreign. Global boundaries between companies, markets, and people have become irrevocably blurred...For companies such as Unilever, ABB, and SmithKline Beecham, globalization has become a natural part of their business, an integral part of their culture. For most companies, however, the goal to become truly global in mindset, staff, and market seems a stretch. Although the oportunities are tempting, the effort, knowledge, and skill required are much greater than for running a domestic operation, and the risks-once you probe beneath the surface-are equally enormous"(pp.261-262).

In this context, the authors, in Chapter 8, first put forward the following ten reasons why organizations might want to become more global: competitive survival, cost spreading, trailblazing, rule of three, domino effect, evolutionary forces, technological revolution, search for innovation, ripple effect, and benchmarking against other companies. Then, they discuss seven challenges companies face in making the global leap: (1)Establishing a workable global structure, (2)Hiring global supermanagers, (3)Managing people for a global environment, (4)Learning to love cultural differences, (5)Avoiding parochialism and arrogance, (6)Designing unifying mechanisms and a global mindset, (7)Overcoming complexity.

In Chapter 9, to overcome these challenges, they show action plans, and suggest ways of moving forward, from learner to launcher and from launcher to leader into the global arena as summarized as below:

I- From Global Learner to Global Launcher

1. Human Resources Practices

* Supply language/cultural sensitivity training.

* Standardize forms and procedures.

* Set up an overseas presence via joint venture, modest acquisition, or establishment of a headquarters.

* Engage in extensive cross-border relationship building.

2. Organizational Structures

* Arrange short-term visits and international assignments.

* Staff for more diversity in management and board of directors.

* Use e-mail and videoconferencing to maintain day-to-day contact.

3. Organizational Processes and Systems

* Establish worldwide shared values, language, and operating principles.

* Conduct fact-finding missions.

* Design ad hoc transnational teams.

* Hold global town meetings and best-practice exchanges of information.

II- From Global Launcher to Global Leader

1. Human Resources Practices

* Seek complete liquidity of human resources: recruit outside the domestic base; place foreign recruits within the domestic base; promote the best people to global assignments; rotate people internationally; use twinning.

* Aim for a global structure.

* Map global processes.

2. Organizational Structure

* Provide continuing global leadership trining and regular transnational training to reinforce the global mindset.

* Remove/minimize country managers and replace with global managers and focus on global customers.

* Routinize real-time global communications.

3. Organizational Processes and Systems

* Use global reward systems.

* Multiply ongoing transnational project teams.

* Work for global integration (for example, total global sourcing, global design, global engineering, and global purchasing).

Finally, they write that "Many tools are available to organizations, and we have described a good number of them here (as summarized above). But senior management must have the skill and foresight to use the right tools in the right way, at the right time, and in the right sequence...Each stage requires structures that enable the crossing of boundaries, systems and procedures that drive global behavior, and people who can learn to extend their thinking beyond their present outlook."

Highly recommended.

Yes and No
The title is a misnomer: Although the authors do indeed suggest how to "break through the chains of organizational structure", they provide an enlightening explanation of four different types of boundaries (vertical, horizontal, external, and geographic) which give definition to any organization. They do not advocate the total elimination of these boundaries (which is impossible, anyway); rather, they suggest how to rearrange them so that an organization can thrive. For the authors, there is what they call "A New World Order":

"In living organisms, membranes exist to give the organization shape and definition. They have sufficient structural strength to prevent the organism from dissolving into an amorphous mess....Like a living organism, the boundaryless organization also evolves and grows, and the placement of boundaries may shift....Because the boundaryless organization is a living continuum, not a fixed state, the ongoing management challenge is to find the right balance of boundaryless behavior, to determine how permeable to make boundaries, and where to place them."

This brief excerpt from the first chapter correctly suggests the purpose of this remarkable book: To explain HOW to meet that challenge.

The material is presented within four parts plus a conclusion. The first explains how to achieve "free movement up and down" by crossing vertical boundaries; the second explains how to achieve "free movement side to side" by crossing horizontal boundaries; the third explains how to achieve "free movement along the value chain" by crossing external boundaries; and in the fourth part, they explain how to achieve "free global movement" by crossing geographic boundaries." Then in the Conclusion, the authors discuss "Making It Happen: Leading Toward the Boundaryless Organization."

The authors also include a series of six questionnaires. By completing each in sequence, the reader is able to determine (a) where her or his organization is now located relative to "the boundaryless paradigm", and (b), what is needed to eliminate the "gap" between where it is now and where it should be. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read The Boundaryless Organization Field Guide. It contains a a hands-on set of diagnostic instruments as well as exercises and tools, and a disk with presentation slides in Powerpoint format.

I agree with the authors: The most restrictive organizational boundaries are in the minds of those within an organization. Organizational as well as personal wounds are usually self-inflicted.

A triumphant crusade against fiefdoms
This is a forward-looking discussion of the paradigm shift from traditional pyramidal organizations to organic, dynamic enterprises that feature permeable boundaries. The book is a triumphant crusade against fiefdoms and for freedom in inter- and intra-organizational life. It demonstrates how "boundaryless" organizations can increase the ability to respond quickly, creatively, flexibly, and in an integrated fashion to market demands. Case studies of change efforts bring the main points alive. Adding to the value of this work are self-diagnostic instruments, charts, and tables. This book is a rich source of insights about organization plus savvy guidelines for taking action. We highly recommend it.

Celebrate Your Creative Self: Over 25 Exercises to Unleash the Artist Within
Published in Hardcover by North Light Books (January, 2003)
Authors: Mary Todd Beam and Dory Kanter
Average review score:

No Experience Necessary!!
Even if you are not entirely sure which end of a paintbrush goes into the paint, with this book you can learn to create a painting in an afternoon which will convince your friends you've got an M.F.A. If you've ever bought art supplies and books and not used them because you felt you could not create satisfactory representational images, give yourself a break and try these techniques of meaningful abstraction. Compared to the cost of a workshop, this book is inexpensive and well worth every penny. It's packed with worthwhile content. I truly believe every person who loves art has all they need inside them to make great art themselves. It's not about expensive materials or years of education--which are great if you happen to be fortunate enough to have them--all you really need is the passion for color and paint. You don't even need a brush. Start where you are and go for it! P.S. That piece of stiff cardboard that comes in the bottom of your Amazon box makes a great painting support with some canvas taped to it!

A Workshop in a Book!
This book is a must for anyone wishing to explore different methods and ideas. The book is beautifully laid out and is a pleasure to look at.The artist presents her ideas in clear concise language with many good illustrations.I liked the small 'boxes' that contained suggestions or comments. There is also a helpfull list of materials used with each project. If you are unable to be at a workshop with Mary Todd Beame this is will help create one in your studio. It is a book that you will return to often for ideas and inspiration.

Simply Inspiring!
I've been a three dimensional artists for almost ten years, but have been intrigued by many other mediums of art for a long time. Mary Todd Beam's book is the best book I've seen to help you feel comfortable trying new techniques and inspire using these methods in your own unique way. When I got this book I couldn't put it down... it is now in my studio and I love the results from my experimentation. I highly recommend this book to both novice and accomplished artists.
